Day 2 – Angkor Beyond the Famous Classics The second day in the Angkor Archaeological Park takes you to impressive temples, hidden treasures and authentic insights into life around Siem Reap. Alongside monumental ancient structures, today’s itinerary also focuses on local culture. The day begins at Pre Rup Temple, an imposing temple mountain dating back to the 10th century. Its stepped architecture and warm sandstone create an impressive setting. From here, you can enjoy beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. The journey continues to Preah Dak, a traditional village in the Angkor area. Here, you can experience everyday local life and get a glimpse into the traditions of the Cambodian countryside. The village is particularly known for its many food stalls offering regional snacks, fresh fruit and typical Cambodian specialities. It is an ideal opportunity to discover local flavours and experience an authentic side of Cambodia away from the major temple complexes. The route then continues to Banteay Srei Temple, often known as the “Citadel of Women”. The temple is renowned for its delicate bas-reliefs and exquisite stone carvings. Thanks to its extraordinary level of detail, it is considered one of the highlights of the Angkor region. Next, the tour visits East Mebon Temple and Ta Som Temple. East Mebon impresses with its monumental architecture and distinctive elephant sculptures. Ta Som, by contrast, feels peaceful and almost enchanted. Trees and roots have grown over parts of the temple, creating a truly atmospheric setting. Another highlight is Neak Pean Temple, situated on a small island in the centre of a former reservoir. Crossing the Neak Pean Bridge leads to the temple and offers a fascinating glimpse into the sophisticated water architecture of the Khmer Empire. The tour then continues to the extensive Preah Khan Temple. Long galleries, intricate carvings and walls covered in vegetation make it one of the most atmospheric temples in Angkor. Here, architecture and nature come together in a particularly impressive way. The day concludes at Phnom Bakheng. This historic temple mountain offers spectacular views across the Angkor landscape. When weather and access conditions allow, it is possible to enjoy a beautiful sunset here, providing a memorable and atmospheric end to the day. A varied second day filled with temples, history, nature, local cuisine and Khmer culture.
